GROWING OLDER

A Piece By: Simaloi

We grew up measuring height
against the kitchen wall,
thinking Mum and Dad would always be
the tallest people we knew.

Now Mum’s hair carries more grey,
Dad moves a little slower,
and somehow the questions have changed—
“Have you eaten?” becomes “Did you eat?”
“Be careful” becomes “Take care.”

We are busy building our lives,
chasing Nairobi traffic, dreams, and tomorrow,
while they sit a little quieter at home,
still telling the same stories
from the village, the old days, the family.

Maybe growing up is realizing
that the hands that once carried us
will one day need holding too—
and before time takes the chance away,
we should sit, listen, laugh,
and stay a little longer.

We grow up thinking our parents will always be strong, always be there. Then one day, we notice the grey in Mum’s hair, Dad moving a little slower, and realize that while we were growing up, they were growing old too.

Kenya has endured maandamano, abductions, killings and grief, yet somehow we keep waking up, going to work, celebrating and finding reasons to live. As another election approaches, this poem asks the question many of us are quietly carrying: will we have to survive another election, or will we finally get to experience one without fear?

“Ni uchungu,” she said. The room replied, “Itaisha tu, vumilia.” As if pain yields to a quiet command, as if the body unspools its tension simply because someone whispered, “Be calm.” A poetic reflection on women’s pain, clinical language, and the deep need for empathy in modern healthcare.

What happens when the chemicals wear thin,
And unnatural light leaves tender faces burned?
When we forget that beauty’s deep within…

Before I tell you God’s name,

I will teach you
the language of rain.
How the earth sighs
before it drinks….

There are many women living inside me.

One folds laundry with soft hands
and dreams of sunlight on clean floors.

One wants to disappear into forests,
become moss, become silence,
become untouched by expectation.
